The spread of 5G wireless technology continues to rip across the country, and finally through Alabama as of May 1st, 2021. On May 1, 2021, the City Council adopted a small cell ordinance for the City of Prichard.
What is small cell technology? In short, small cells are wireless transmitters and receivers that provide network coverage to smaller, denser areas and communities. While tall, high-power cell phone towers provide a strong signal across wide distances, small cell technology better suits cities, stadiums and other communities with dense populations over a short area. The ultimate goal of small cell technology is to improve cellular and internet experience for users.
With the incoming 5G network across the United States, small cell technology is critical for boosting internet speeds and providing superior phone connection signal experience. If you have ever driven through a certain area and lost your phone signal, you know what I mean.
What will small cell technology look like in our city? The cells, which are about the size of a small miniature refrigerator or cooler, will be mounted on street lights, utility poles, and other structures. Unlike the huge cell phone towers that we can typically look up and identify, small cell hardware is discrete and energy efficient. This technology should blend seamlessly with the environment. In short, you shouldn’t know it’s there.
What does this mean for Prichard? This means a better experience for phone and internet users, and it also means increased revenue for the City. Small cell technology providers must pay a fee(s) to install the technology within our city’s limits. With this increased revenue, the City is able to improve quality of life for you, the citizens: more paved roads, more trained, informed law enforcement and first responders, and better infrastructure.
